Upcoming workshop:

Capturing the Human Experience in Place
Architectural and landscape photography in Greece
University of Tennessee Knoxville mini-term course abroad
19 May - 8 June, 2022
Athens, Delphi, Meteora, Ioannina, Missolonghi, Sifnos, Paros
Instructors: Mark DeKay - architect, professor; Pygmalion Karatzas - architect, photographer; Susanne Bennett - editor, coach

Overview:
We will travel around Greece to study architecture and landscapes from the ancient classical sites to contemporary works, using photography to document, analyze and express. Students will spend time in Athens, in the rural landscape of the Meteoran monasteries, and in the islands of Sifnos and Paros.
The course takes as a theme occupants’ experiences of buildings and landscape, particularly, the experience of nature and natural forces, such as climate. Students are challenged to transcend documentation and express the feelings evoked in the built and natural environments.
Building up on the two instructors’ ongoing collaboration and scholarship of architectural photography, we will engage students in its artistic and documentary aspects, in the technology of digital production and the presentation of work. While architectural photography is often taken to be only a commercial activity for the publicity of architectural works, we expand the idea to buildings in their contexts, and to, on one hand, documentation and on the other, artistic vision. We also visit and study landscapes, waterscapes, and cityscapes. Working with the idea that photography always includes a point-of-view, we will also explore digital post-processing techniques and the editorial selection of image series for exhibition.
We will visit a few places and spend more time in each to allow a deeper experience of place and to have the time required for photographic study.

Tentative itinerary:
Day1 / May19 - Day6 / May24: Athens.
Day7 / May25: Delphi.
Day8 / May26 - Day9 / May27: Meteora.

Themes of the course:

The goal of part 1 is for the students to become more fluent with shooting in manual mode and post-processing in Lightroom and Photoshop, combining classroom tutorials and on-site workshops. Locations include prominent contemporary architectural projects in Athens and landmark archaeological sites.

The goal of part 2 is to guide the students to explore their own artistic vision. The countryside settings of Delphi, Meteora, Missolonghi Lagoon can infuse our contemplative creativity; building upon the rigorous technical learning and practice of part 1.

The goal of part 3 is to experience Biophilic Design Schemas and advance our architectural photography skills. The picturesque Aegean islands of Sifnos and Paros are ideal settings, rich in both vernacular and contemporary architectural examples.
